The Stuff You Need::
some sort of container/jar/bottle/etc.
whatever yarn you have lying around
an appropriately sized crochet hook
locking stitch marker (optional)
Things You Should Know::
slip stitch
half-double crochet
single crochet
How It's Done::
Easy Peasy, that's how. Start off by making a chain that fits snugly around the base of whatever container you are using, and sl st. to join.
Every row: ch2, hdc around, sl st. to close round.
[You may find it helpful to use a locking stitch marker to mark the second ch. each round before you begin working your circle, since this is where you will join to form the round]
Occasionally hold your cozy up to your container to see how you're progressing. You can try it on and see how it fits every so often too.
When you get near the top you have a few options:
You can just end it with an hdc round, or if you don't have the space you can just single crochet for your final round.
You can do what I did with the green example and make a ruffly decorative edging this way:
ch2, *hdc three times in next stitch, slip stitch next stitch* to the end.
Or you can do something even more spectacular! =D
(The green example was made with some leftover acrylic and a smidgen of wool on a LustraSilk Conditioner jar, and for the purple example I used thick-and-thin wool and a Gypsy Teas tin)
